President - Toni Marano
Toni is a senior from Oak Brook, Illinois majoring in Food Systems. This is her third and final year on the triathlon team and wishes she knew about the team freshman year! Toni grew up watching her dad run marathons and compete in triathlons. She got into triathlons first racing with her sisters. Toni loves the racing atmosphere, road tripping with the team, and team bonding. The team is so open to new members and Toni strives to keep the welcoming atmosphere.
Vice PRESIDENT - Garrett Williams
Garrett is a junior hailing from Golden Valley, MN majoring in Mechanical Engineering. His favorite flavor of Clif Bar is White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. This is his third year competing with the team, having joined after a short stint with the UMN Jog Club. He enjoys the friendly and motivating atmosphere of a team that loves to train hard to but also knows how to have a good time. Garrett's favorite tri team moments include the team trip to Colorado his freshman year and competing at Nationals in 2018. He is looking forward to growing and helping lead this team to another successful, fun year! Garrett is also the team nerd.
RECRUITMENT AND OUTREACH COORDINATOR - SOPHIE RABINO
Sophie is a junior from Woodbury, Minnesota majoring in Sociology LCD. She was a competitive swimmer growing up and ran some local races over the summer which led her to start doing triathlons in middle school. She loves being a part of the team because everyone motivates each other to get better and it is always fun to have lots of people to train with! Her favorite moment with the team was winning the 2018 spirit comp at Nationals. This year she is looking forward to the team trips and the many car rides to Iowa!
treasurer - Julia riedl
Julia is a first year graduate student (and 3rd year in the MD/PhD program) in Immunology and she is from Plymouth, Minnesota. She is a newbie to the sport of triathlon – she joined last summer but loves a challenge (swimming!!) and training with the most fun and supportive team around. Her favorite part of triathlon team is spending time together especially when traveling for races together.
Travel coordinator - elizabeth van laarhoven
Liz is a junior from Plymouth, Minnesota. She is majoring in Nursing. She has always had a strong swim background, but has also recently been getting into running; she ran her first marathon last fall. She has been doing triathlons for the past 3 years. Her favorite part of the team is the road trips especially to Tuscaloosa for nationals. She is looking forward to kicking butt with the team at the summer races.
social media manager - miguel anselmo
Miguel is a junior from Gainesville, Virginia studying Physiology and Neuroscience. He joined the team his freshman year looking to surround himself with more like-minded people, which definitely happened! He is addicted to white chocolate macadamia nut clif bars, in which he blames Garrett for. In his free time you can find him singing Frozen songs with children at the Masonic Children's Hospital and researching at the UMN Rehabilitation Center, but not at a concert whose tickets cost more than $15.
volunteering and events coordinator - joshua reece
Joshua is a Junior from Roseville, Minnesota majoring in Sociology of Law, Criminology and Deviance, studying while serving in the Army National Guard. This is his third year competing in triathlons and being on the team. Joshua enjoys all three sports had experience with competitive swimming and cross country running, and found a natural transition into cycling with it being his favored mode of transportation during high school. He enjoys singing to Florence + The Machine in the shower, over analyzing everything, and loves the welcoming team atmosphere. This year he hopes to continue to spread the outreach and presence of the team beyond the University of Minnesota campus and bring new members in with the opportunity of sharing his passion for the sport.
coach - lou hughes
Louis has been coaching the Minnesota Triathlon Team for 4 years and was a Graduate of the University of Minnesota: Duluth campus. Under Louis' coaching, the Men's Minnesota Triathlon Team have twice-over been MWCTC Champions. Additionally, the Women's Minnesota Triathlon Team have thrice been MWCTC Champions during his 4 year career. He has been competing in triathlons since he was 15 years old, and there is nothing he enjoys more. Louis is a USAT Certified Level I Triathlon Coach, a two-time USAT All-American, and an ITU World Championship Qualifier.
